Welcome!
The Galax Recreation Center provides all of your favorite programs, classes, events, along with many new an exciting programs for the upcoming year. As we move into 2024 we will continue to add more new programs and activities for all of our citizens to enjoy. The current programs and activities that are being offered are senior programs, aquatic exercises classes, youth sports, cardio and weight rooms, indoor walking track, swim lessons, water aerobic classes, yoga, senior exercise classes, open gym. A quick reminder of our outdoor facilities that are available include the walking track at Mt. View and Felts Park, tennis courts, Galax Municipal Golf Course, skate park, picnic shelters, and playgrounds.
We hope to continue to make the Galax Recreation Center your destination stop for your fitness and leisure activities. We want the Galax Recreation Department to be a part of you and your family’s daily fitness and leisure routine in 2024 and beyond. If you are new to the area stop by the Galax Recreation Center and take a tour of our facilities and also enjoy a first time visit pass to participate in one of our classes, cardio or weight room for free. In closing, we look forward to you visiting with us at the Galax Recreation Center and enjoying one of our many special events in the park.

Seniors attended a Luau party last Thursday at Parks & Rec. Guests dined on a potluck meal and BBQ from The Galax Cakery, and then we had a great time playing The Price is Right Hawaiian style!
A big thank you to Sandy Steffy with 1 to 1 Advisors of Insurance for all her help decorating, donating items for games and for helping out the day of the party. Thank you to Blue Ridge Home Health for donating a door prize and for letting us borrow their Plinko board. We appreciate all the help from our staff to make this party a success!

The 10K course is an out and back course and is entirely flat as it follows Chestnut Creek. The race is on the New River Trail. Virginia Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) Boating Safety Education Course

You must register online for the class at the DWR website under boating education. Class is very limited. Register early
About the Event
This is a free boating safety course and meets the requirements for earning the state boating certification. The class will begin at 8:30am and end at 5pm. The class does include an exam at the end of the day. Please pack a lunch as we will not have time to go out to lunch. The course is best suited for adults and youth older than 12 years of age.

Overview
This course is recommended for motivated students 12 years of age and older with good reading and comprehension skills who want to learn more about the fundamentals of safe and responsible boating. Course materials are on a 6th grade reading level.
Details
A typical Boater Education Course lasts 6-8 hours with exam time depending on the class location and instructor.
Who Needs Boater Education?
In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly enacted a law to establish a boating safety education compliance requirement. This requirement has been phased in over the past several years; and by July 1, 2016, all operators (regardless of age) of PWCs (personal watercraft such as jet skis, Sea Doos, and Wave Runners) and operators (regardless of age) of motorboats with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater will be required to have a boating safety education course completion card on board when operating a PWC or motorboat.

Children’s Activity Programs
Summer Activity Program (SAP) 2024
The Galax Parks and Recreation Department Summer Activity program offers quality supervision and a fun and safe environment full of multiple activities for children ages 6 to 12. Activities include: indoor and outdoor recreational games and activities, crafts, and swimming at the outdoor pool! The program operates Monday through Friday from 8 am until 5:30 pm. Closed on July 4th. The start date of the program will be contingent upon the release date of Galax City Schools for summer break and the program will end on Friday, July 26th.
Weekly Rates:
$100.00 per child
$180.00 for two children
$270.00 for three children in the same household.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY PROGRAM (ASAP) 2024-25
The Galax Parks and Recreation Department’s After School Activity Program offers quality supervision for children who attend Galax City Schools in grades K through 5. The program provides after school pick up until 5:30 pm, a snack, recreational games and activities, crafts and homework assistance. The program operates Monday through Friday except when Galax City Schools are closed for holidays, workdays, and inclement weather. If the school closes before noon for inclement weather, the program will not operate. We do operate for any closing at noon or after.
Weekly Rates:
$50.00 per child $90.00 for two children in the same household
$130.00 for three children in the same household

Skate Park
The downtown skate park is located at the corner of Bartlett and Main Street, beside Standard Auto Parts.
This facility offers several different ramps, jumps bars, and boxes.
Hours of Operation
Galax Recreation Center’s operating hours are established to best serve the needs of the public. The Recreation Center will be closed on weekends that community events are scheduled in Felts’ Park. Children under age 11 must be accompanied by an adult at all times while using the Galax Recreation Center, Indoor/Outdoor Pool, etc. unless they are participating in a Galax Parks and Recreation Department program or activity (example: swimming lessons, youth basketball practice, swim team, etc.)
