Galax Safe Routes To School

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a city, school, community effort to encourage school and community members to walk/bike ride to and from school or work if they live within one-mile of their school or work place.  The program is funded through the Virginia Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration and the U. S. Department of Transportation. The benefits include exercise, reducing obesity and air pollution from vehicles.

Safe Routes to School Walk 04This activity is being offered to kindergarten to 4th grade Galax Elementary School students during the school year.  If you would like Galax Safe Routes to School to present this program to your organization or neighborhood, please contact Linda Mock at lmock@galaxva.com.

Always Remember:

  •  Always walk facing traffic, ride with the flow of traffic.
  •  Always look left, right and left again before crossing the street.
  •  Wear bright, reflective clothing when walking or riding.
  •  Put up your cell phone while crossing the street.
  •  Always cross the street at corners, signal lights and crosswalks.
  •  Always wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight at night.

 

BIKE LIBRARY

Location:  Recreation Center, Felts’ Park

Galax City Residents and students can check out a bicycle and helmet at no cost.  “It’s FREE.”  Parents must sign a permission form for children under the age of 13.  Bikes are available during the normal hours of operation at the Parks department, open to close. Check in at the front desk for more info. Get ready for spring fun by learning to ride now.  Riding lessons available by contacting Safe Routes to School.

 

 

 

BICYCLE RODEO, EARTHDAY CELEBRATION

Join us on Saturday, APRIL 22, 2017 Earth Day, 10 am, Rec Center, Felts Park, to learn basic bike safety, have your bike inspected and enjoy being outside and exercising.  Bicycle riding is a better way to help the environment. Our theme for this day is, “Use Feet, Not Fuel.” Free helmets, T-shirts and gifts will be given out. There will be free nutritional snacks, tips on healthy eating and better bodies. Music and games. There will be an opportunity to win donated bikes. The Galax Police Department will conduct the bike safety.  Come join the fun!  Free to ALL ages.

 

BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY

Mark your calendar for Bike to School Day, Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the Galax schools as we celebrate a healthier way to get to school.

BICYCLE RIDING, SAFETY LESSONS

Bicycle riding/safety classes are available through Galax Parks and Recreation Department by appointment. The classes are free.  Sign up now.  The Bike Library will furnish the bike and helmet if you do not own one.  Attendees will learn on the same bike, helmet during the class.

We are seeking volunteer bicycle riders and instructors to assist us in teaching bicycle riding and safety to city school students.  The City’s Bicycle Library will provide bikes, helmets and safety resources. Please volunteer today by contacting Linda Mock, Galax Safe Routes to School lmock@galaxva.com, 276-601-3000.  Classes are to start soon.  We need your love of biking to inspire the next generation.

  • Watch drivers and make sure they are watching you.
  • Put up your cell phone while crossing the street. Don’t be distracted. Listen up and watch.
  • Always cross the street at corners, signal lights and crosswalks.
  • Always wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight at night or use flashing lights on bicycles.
