AMERICAN RED CROSS Learn-To-Swim Classes
Welcome to the American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Program. You have started your child on a journey to learn how to be safe in, on, and around the water and to swim well. American Red Cross Learn – to – Swim is made up of six levels of swimming and water safety instruction. As participants progress through the levels and develop these skills they become safer and better swimmers. We’re proud to offer you – Professional Water Safety Instructors who are well trained by the American Red Cross. Learning made fun in a safe environment. It is a balanced program that teaches swimming skills and how to be safe in the water. A comprehensive swimming and water safety program for everyone in the family – from infancy to adulthood.

Level 1 - Water safety rules, entering the water, traveling 5 yards independently, bobbing 3 times, gliding on front supported 2 body lengths, rolling to a back float for 3 seconds with support and recover.

Level 2 - Water safety rules, jump in at chest deep water, float on front and back for 5 seconds and recover, roll from back to front and recover, push off and swim combined arm and legs on front for 5 body lengths and roll to back for 15 seconds, roll to front for 5 body lengths.

Level 3 - Water safety rules, jump into deep water, retrieving objects, front and back crawl 15 yards, dives, demonstrate rotary breathing, maintain body position in water by floating or treading water for 30 seconds.

Level 4 - Water safety rules, elementary backstroke 25 yards, butterfly 15 yards, breaststroke 15 yards, rescue breathing, freestyle 25 yards, back crawl 15 yards, open turns on the front and the back.

Level 5 - Water safety rules, shallow angle dive, elementary backstroke 50 yards, butterfly 25 yards, back crawl 25 yards, freestyle 50 yards, breaststroke 25 yards, feet first surface dive, tuck/pike surface dive, sidestroke 50 yards

Level 6 - Water safety rules, diving, continues with stroke proficiency work so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Lifeguard readiness, fitness swimming/swim team, personal water safety.

Parent Preschool and Parent Tot - are designed to acclimate a child to the water environment and teach muscle control and knowledge of pool rules and provide a safe friendly environment for the child to become accustomed to the pool.

Adult and Teen - provide an opportunity for these individuals to take swim lessons in a safe and friendly environment among people of their own age groups.
Each class will be lead by at least one Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
Parent’s come in for Half of the 5th class and for the Entire 10th class to see their child’s progress in Swim Lessons.

Adult/Senior Citizen Swimming Lessons
You’re never too old to learn to swim. (Our oldest student was 92 and learned to swim in six weeks.) This class is for adults and senior citizens, ages 18 and up. Instructor: Michael Dees Cost: 30.00

PARENT/CHILD WATER AEROBICS EVENING CLASS
This Class is a half hour water exercise class designed for parents and children to take together. All participants need to be comfortable in the water and children should be able to stand flat footed in 3 foot of water and have it below their shoulder level.

AQUATICS
AMERICAN RED CROSS BABYSITTING Saturday, October 1, 2011 Class meets Saturday from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. Lunch will be provided as part of the class. Class is designed for participants 11 years old and up. The participants will learn the skills that are needed to baby sit. They will become trained in Infant and child CPR. Learn how to make a nutritious lunch. Keep children they care for and themselves safe. Learn how to handle emergencies such as injuries and illness and household accidents. Cost: $ 75.00
AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD TRAINING March 2, 3, 4, 2012 Class meets for first time Friday, March 2 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm; Saturday 8:00 am – 6:00 pm; and Sunday 8:00 am – Until Finished. Pre-requisites: Must swim 300 meters and Swim 25 meters, retrieve a ten-pound brick from deep end of pool and return it in under 1 minute 45 seconds. Age requirements: Must be a minimum of 15 years old by March 4, 2012 Cost: $175.00
GALAX RIPTIDE SWIM TEAM Session I September 12 – December 15, 2011 Session II January 2 – May 10, 2012 Cost: $30.00 Rip group meets Monday & Wednesday 2:45 – 3:30 pm Tide group meets Tuesday & Thursday 3:30 – 4:30 pm or 4:30 to 5:30 pm depending on which time is more suitable for the swimmer. The Rip group is the beginning swimmer’s group and the Tide group is the advanced swimmer’s group. Coaching staff will place swimmers in groups at the beginning of each session. There are not many opportunities for swim meets during winter swimming. If you are interested in your child having more opportunities to swim in more meets, please talk with Coach Trace about USA Swimming.
UNITED STATES SWIMMING The Galax Riptide also offers a USA Swimming Team under the same banner. Coach Trace USA Swimming certified swim coach. Meets are made available to USA swimmers who are willing to travel in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Call Coach Trace for more information and USA Swimming fee structure at 276-236-3218.
